John A. Wallis.

Was born at Richfield, Pennsylvania, November 3rd, 1843. Died October 1916, at 11:05 p. m. Aged 72 years, 11 months, 16 days. Mr. Wallis had for some time suffered from appendicitis. An operation for this trouble was performed Tuesday evening, October 10th. He recovered in good shape from the wound in the operation but on Sunday the 15th pneumonia set in. He gradually grew weaker until death came to relieve.

During Mr. Wallis’ young manhood days he was a soldier. On August 15, 1861, he volunteered for services in Co. C, 9th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers at Elkhart, Indiana. He was mustered in at LaPorte, Indiana ten days later. On February 8, 1863, he was honorably discharged on account of disability caused by gunshot wounds. On July 2 of that same year, 1863, he joined the Pennsylvania Militia as drummer. On April 28, 1868, he was appointed a sergeant in Co. C, 3rd Reg. U. S. Cavalry.

He was united in marriage to Miss Katherine Kenfield at Oak Harbor, Ohio, October 4th, 1868. Seven children were born to this union. Mrs. Mary Huffman, who died October 14, 1914, William and Nelson, who with their families live on the home place, Edward, who lives in Blackwell, Oklahoma, Emma, who died Sept. 26th 1880, George, who lives at Collinsville, Okla. and Mrs. Nora Wright, who lives just south of the old home place.

The Wallis family moved to Greenwood county, Mo. in 1880. In ’82 they came to the old home place north of town.

Funeral services were held in the Moran Presbyterian church Saturday October 21, at 2 o’;clock p. m. conducted by Rev. A. Frank Johnson, Jr. assisted by Rev. MacHill of the Baptist Church. Interment was made in Moran cemetery by the side of the beloved wife who preceded him to the grave Jan. 5.

The funeral text was found in 2nd Tim. 2:3: “Suffer hardship with me as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.”
