Joseph Getz.

  The bugle call was sounded for another comrade this morning about the hour of 2:50, and Joseph Getz answered the summons.  He has not been in robust health for several months and had been confined to his home the past three months, gradually becoming weaker.  The past two weeks it seemed as though he knew the end was drawing nearer, and he felt he was soon to leave this world.  He was 70 years old.  He served three years in the civil war as member of Company E, 53rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers in the Second Corps.

  During this service he received a gunshot wound which left one hand in a paralyzed condition.  He was an active member of the Judson Kirkpatrick Post G. A. R. and the post will attend the funeral in a body.  Mr. Getz was a man who was quiet and unassuming in manner but he had many very warm friends.  He had no lodge affiliations other than the G. A. R., and preferred the quiet of home life being a devoted husband and father.

  He came to Newton with his family in 1883 and since that time they have continued to reside here.  He is survived by wife and five children, sons Allen of Kansas City, Charlie and John and daughters Mrs. Mabel Hand and Miss Pearl of Newton.  The funeral service will be held at the home at 321 East Eighth at 10 o’clock Thursday forenoon.
