  Joseph Marshall Howell was born in Laclede Co., Missouri, July 15, 1843, and removed with his parents when quite young to Johnson Co., Illinois.  Here he grew to manhood and at the age of 16, he united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church.  He was united in marriage to Ida Moray, February 22, 1871.  He remained a consistent member of the church of his early choice until the year 1884, when with his family he moved to Kansas. Finding here no church of his faith, he united with the Advent Christian church of which he was a member at the time of his death.

  He offered his life to his country and enlisted in the United States Army as a Private, Co. A, 145th Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Infantry and received a honorable discharge at the close of the war.

  He led a very quite and upright life and was an upright and genuine Christian from his youth.

  He was a faithful and devoted husband and a kind and loving father.

  The faithful wife and two sons Joseph and Charles were present at the time of his death and with the aid of skilled physicians did all that willing hands and loving hears could do to restore him to health but the dread Reaper came and garnered the ripened sheaf.  After a very brief illness he fell peacefully asleep at the age of 72 years and 6 months, January 15, 1916, at his home 1282 Mulvane St., Topeka, Kansas.  He leaves to mourn his loss his devoted wife, four sons, James, Joseph, Robert and Charles; two daughters, Minnie E. Brown and Mollie Woodward, together with many other relatives and a great host of friends.  The memory of his quite upright life stands as a beacon light to guide the fast steps of those who are left to mourn.

  Funeral services were held at the home Monday, January 17, 1916.  Interment at Barclay, Kans.
