Rowland J. Edwards, Succumbs in Los Angeles, Cal.

  Emporia, Kan., March 6--Rowland J. Edwards, who was corporal in charge of the first squad of Union soldiers to enter Atlanta during the Civil war, is dead in Los. Angeles, Cal., where he was spending the winter.  Mr. Edwards was confined in Libby prison during the war, but was exchanged and later carried the flag of the Wisconsin troops on the march with Sherman from Atlanta to the sea.  He served in Company F., Twenty-Second Wisconsin infantry.

  Mr. Edwards was born in Wales in 1842.  After the Civil war, he went to Colorado and engaged in the mining and ranching business.  At one time he held leases on the land now comprising Estes Park, Colo.  He came to Emporia in 1884 and was one of the incorporators of the Citizens National bank.  He also was president of the Eureka (Kan.) National bank.  The body will be brought to Emporia for burial.
