Funeral Will Be Held at the Home

Of His Nephew, Moses B. Shirley,

713 West Main Street, at 3

O’clock Tomorrow Afternoon

  S. R. Shirley, a Wilson county pioneer, died at 6:30 o’clock this morning at the home of W. E. Beavers, 421 South Kansas avenue, where he had been living since last September.  The funeral will be held from the home of his nephew, Moses B. Shirley, 713 West Main street, tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock.  The services will be conducted by Dr. C. C. Cissell, a pastor of the Methodist church.  Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.  The Chanute post of the Grand Army of the Republic will have a part in the service. 

  Mr. Shirley was born in Adair county, Kentucky, June 19, 1834.  In 1850 he went to Texas where he was engaged for a few years trading with the Indians.  In 1858 he returned as far East as Illinois, where he was joined the next year by his family.  At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in Company E of the Thirty-Eighth Illinois Infantry.  Because of ill health he was discharged in 1863.

  March 28, 1870, he was married to Anna E. Stover.  Mr. and Mrs. Shirley, in company with the four brothers, moved to Wilson county, Kansas, in the same year.  Here he engaged in stock raising and dairying until he moved to Yates Center to engage in the photograph business.  Later he conducted a gallery in Chanute.  He moved back to Yates Center, buying a news stand.  After retiring he has made his home most of the time since 1906 in Chanute.
