They are Passing Away.

S. S. Speakman died at his home in this city Monday, April 22, at 12:30 p. m., the immediate cause of death being a stroke of paralysis which came upon him a week before. He had been in poor heath for some time before his death, however, and had little vitality left to stand the final shock.

Stephen Smith Speakman was born Oct. 11, 1844, in Boone county, Kentucky. Shortly afterward his family moved to Indiana where he lived until 1871 when he came to Kansas.

He was married to Josephine Langtree Feb. 1, 1866 at Aurora, Ind. Six children were born to this union, all of whom are living and were with him when the end came. He was an old soldier, having been a member of the Ninety-first Regiment Indiana Infantry, Co. H. He was a member of the Humboldt G.A. R. and always attended its meetings if possible. He liked to hear stories of the war and attend encampments whenever he could.

He moved to Humboldt from the farm in 1897, but soon tired of being idle and secured the appointment of carrier of R. F. D. No. 2 in August, 1904, and he liked the work well and it is evident from the many kindnesses shown to him by the patrons of the route that he did his work well.

The funeral services were held at his late residence Wednesday at 2 p. m., Rev. F. W. Fenn, officiating, and the body laid to rest in Mt. Hope cemetery. A large number of friends attended the funeral.

The deceased was held in high esteem by those on his route as rural mail carrier and by the post office force as he was always kind, genial and they, with the carriers on other routes, will sadly miss him.

The family have the deepest sympathy of a host of friends in this sad bereavement.
