FATHER DEAD.

  Thomas Asher McLeland was born near Frankfort, Clinton county, Indiana, April 18, 1835.  He came to Kansas in 1859 and settled on a claim near Carlyle.  On October 12, 1860 he was united in marriage to Caroline Decker who preceded him to her heavenly home January 3, 1913.  To this union eight children were born four of whom survive, J. R. McLeland, Pleasanton, Kas.; T. A. McLeland jr., Iola, Kas.; B. C. McLeland, of Chanute, Kas.; Sarah J. McLeland, Kansas City, Kas.

  The subject of this sketch joined the colors at his country’s call October 18, 1861, served for three years and three months and was given an honorable discharge with the rank of Corporal January 15, 1865.  After being mustered out he returned to the home of his childhood to pay a short visit and then came to the old place near Carlyle in 1865 where he resided until 1897 when he moved to Kansas City, Kansas, where until January 10, 1916, he served as U. S. Inspector of Meats.  Since that date he had not been able to go to his work.

  He united with the Christian church 22 years ago and with an old school friend was baptized on Easter Sunday.  He passed away August 30, 1916 the fiftieth anniversary of the G. A. R.  He was in his eighty-second year.  He was ready to die and wanted to go.—Contributed to Iola Register.
