Watson Van Ness Manly was born in
Rutland, Vt., January 1, 1835, and died at his home in this city May 17, 1916,
aged 81 years, four months, and 16 days. He was united in marriage to Miss
Elizabeth Schermerborn February 11, 1862, at Oconomowoe, Wis.
In October, 1879, Mr. and Mrs.
Manly started on a 1,000 mile trip from Wisconsin to western Kansas, which
terminated at Cawker City. In 1888 they moved to Sabetha and have since
that time. Mrs Manly died in 1909.
Six children were born to them all
of whom survive except one son, who died in infancy. They are: Mrs.
Mary C. Thompson of Holton; Charles H. of Kimbel, Neb.; Norman V. of Rosehill,
Ia.; Chauncey J. of Axtell; Mrs. Jessie Stice of this city.
Mr. Manly was a devout and conscientious Christian. He longed to go home and was ready for the Master’s call. He was a member of the Congregational church in this city where funeral services were held Saturday at 2:30 o’clock. Sabetha Post, No. 175, of which he was a member, attended in a body, with the Women’s Relief Corps. He enlisted in Co. H. Seventh Wisconsin in 1862 and received his discharge from the army in July 1865.
