CAPT. WM. BRAINERD DEAD.

Settled in This County in '66 and Lived Here Ever Since.

Capt. William Brainerd died at his home in this city, early yesterday morning. He had been in poor health for the past several years but his conditions were not known to be so serious to his many friends in this city and all over the county. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the home and will be conducted by Rev. Nelson King. Burial will be made in the Erie cemetery. The Masonic lodge will have charge of the burial services.

The late Capt. Brainerd was a pioneer of Neosho county. With his wife, he moved to this county in 1866 and settled on the large farm, three miles east of Erie, now known as the old Brainerd home farm. He has lived in this county ever since and until ten years ago made his home on the farm, east of town. Since then the Brainerd family has resided in Erie. The deceased is survived by a wife and two children being Mrs. Bertha deNeidman, of California and Elmer Brainerd of this city.

Capt. Wm. Brainerd was a civil war veteran. He was a member of Co. B, First Reg., Mo. Engineers, and saw active service from September '61 until September '64. Following the war he went to Chanbersburg, Illinois and after spending a year at that place came on to Kansas. He was 80 years old last September.

This community has lost one of its best citizens in the death of Capt. Wm. Brainerd but much satisfaction can be gained from the fact that the deceased lived to such a grand old age and during all this time he has been actively engaged in doing good for his country, his family and his friends.
