OBITUARY.

William Levi McAlexander was born April 6, 1839 at Crayton, Ohio, and died in Newton, April 5, 1917, after a lingering illness. He was married to Jerusahali McIntyre, May 20, 1869 at Hartford, Ind., and they continued to reside there until 1879 when they came to Harvey county and settled on a farm near Halstead where they lived two years, coming to Newton about 1880, Mr. McAlexamder was employed for a number of years by the Santa Fe and when his failing health prevented him from great activity, he was selected to be watchman at the tower at the Main street crossing, which place he filled well, until he was retired on the pension list of Santa Fe employees.

He served in the Civil War for over a year, having enlisted in Co. E, 113 Ohio Volunteers, and was a member of the G. A. R. Post here.

He was the father of nine children one died in infancy and the oldest son in last September. Those who survive him are Mrs. Wm. Drury of Bisbee, Ariz., Mrs. J. McCafferty, of Ray, Ariz., John McAlexander of Trinidad, Colo., Mrs. L. E. Wilson of Emporia, Mrs. A. E. Pyle of Mullinsville, Kans., and Frank McAlexander and Mrs. D. Clinton Ralph of Newton. After the death of his wife, Mr. McAlexander made his home with his daughter Mrs. Ralph where he passed away and for the past year he had been almost helpless scarcely ever being able to get out of his chair.

He was a member of the Evangelical church and his funeral conducted by Rev. C. L. Sorg was held at that church Easter Sunday afternoon and he was laid to rest in Greenwood cemetery. The G. A. R. had charge of the services at the grave.
