A Lost CSA Soldier

A lost Confederate Soldier "Scott Williams" <bluegray@hotmail.com>

This is a moving account of a Confederate veteran killed far from home. His former enemies, in a GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) post, took special care of his body. Can anyone furnish information about JOHN HANEY, 4th Texas Cavalry, CS Army?

His is an interesting story - as much of it as we know. Mr. Haney (Rank unknown.) was a hobo, a homeless person, in 1906. He fell off a train of the Rock Island RR in Ottawa, Illinois while "riding the rails" and was killed. The only information or identification on his person was a slip of paper giving his name and his Confederate unit, and asking any reader of this note to help Mr. Haney if they could. The Seth C. Earl GAR Post 156 of Ottawa took Mr. Haney's remains under their protection and gave him a funeral with full military honors, burying him in the GAR plot in the Ottawa Avenue Cemetery alongside and among the Union veterans. His grave is marked with the standard curved
top of the Union headstones, however instead of the shield that is normally on the face of the Union headstones, his is marked with the lone star of Texas within a circle above his name, 4th Texas Cal (sic) and C S Army.

Each year at Memorial Day (The Federal one.) his grave is marked with the US flag as are the other graves of his Union compatriots in death, plus a Confederate Battle flag, by the Ottawa American Legion and VFW Posts. There is also a brass marker or flag holder supplied by the GAR (?) with
"soldier" on it. Most of the other markers have the word "veteran" on them, although others among the Union veterans also have the word "soldier" inscribed.

Memorial services have been held at his gravesite in past years by local Confederate re-enacting groups but it was just yesterday that I learned of his burial site here in Ottawa.

Any information about Mr. Haney's service in the Confederate Army, or the whereabouts of his descendants, if any, would be appreciated very much. Please respond direct to me via e-mail if you can help us.

I have a mailing on the Texahoma list that someone copied over as an interesting piece but I have taken this on as a project. I only recently joined this list. John Haney (d. 1906 in Illinois) was a member of the 4th Texas Cav. Rgmt. but I have not found the original muster rolls and my
local resources don't have them. I have located several confederate pension applications to the state of Texas that have a J. or John Haney but I have not been able to track down the ancestors and will have more luck after the copies of the original applications arrive from Austin. Unfortunately this will take as long as four months (they are swamped with copy request at the Texas State Library.

It must be remembered that although the 4th mustered at San Antonio, over 80% (some say 90%) were "from out of state". This is one of those facts that can be misleading due to the nature of the period. The original settlers and warriors of the Texas Republic were still young enough in some
cases to fight in the Civil War and they had children that could. Few if any at this time were Native Texans. There was still much land available in Texas so there were still people coming from MO, KS, OK, LA and others Gone To Texas. I will continue to search the Archives of Original Land
Owners for this person.

In short, I feel a link to this person because of my generations Viet Nam veterans that became homeless. I think that returning this man to his family in a spiritual sense would honor the veterans of so many wars that did not come home or were never the same again.
