Jacob was Blacksmith according to the 1900 Shawnee Co., KS Census and lived close to the smokey river area. He and Rachel had 5 children. James Edgar (married Myrtle SMITH), Alice Evaline (my grandmother who married Edward John GIBBONS), Kirk Andrew (married Rosalyn JONES), Charles Arthur(married several times, one I know of is Evelyn DOYLE and his last marriage was to an Indian woman and they lived on the reservation there around Topeka, Shawnee Co., KS. I also understand I have a 2nd cousin who still lives there...would love to contact her but I do not know any names...perhaps she has the maiden name of Miller, Charles Arthur is buried there at the reservation) and Orville Theodore who married Catherine HOFFMAN. Marie, Wichita, KS 67217 Query: I am looking for the parentage of James MEACHAM who lived in Topeka, Shawnee Co., KS. at the time of his daughter, my gr-grandmother's birth. Her name was Rachel Rebecca Salome MEACHAM (b. 8 December 1872). One of James' granddaughters said that he was a war veteran, I assume civil war. James had at least three wives that I know of; 1) Alice SUTTER, 2) ? CHESSMAN and 3) Rachel's mother Mary BRATTON. Besides Rachel, James and Mary had 3 other children, Kay and Jay, twins who I understand died young (may be buried in Shawnee Co., KS.) and Gay who lived his later in California and was a bus driver. 1880 census showed that James' family was living on Van Buren St. with a border by the name of George Hammel. 1900 Census shows that James was born in PA. Can anyone help or fill in holes? |
