Holiday Marred By Fatality Here

The Fourth of July holiday in Wellington was marred by the death of Robert Lee Hopkins, 82, of 904 N. A street who was struck and killed by an automobile as he was crossing the street on North A about 10:30pm Saturday.

Hopkins was rushed by ambulence to St. Lukes hospital where he lived only a few minutes after arrival. His death was attributed to a severe concussion. He also suffered a fractured leg.

Forrest L. Hain of 502 E. Lincoln was the driver of the car which struck him. County Attorney Lewis Nugen said today that from the information he had received so far there was no part of neglience on Hain and that no charges had been filed.

Hopkins was born Nov. 2, 1875 in Atchison county, Mo., and had lived in Wellington since 1915. He was a retired carpenter quitting in 1941.

He was a member of the First Christian church.

Survivors include a son, Lee M. Hopkins of 310 W. 11th and a niece, Mrs. J.B. McGillcuddy of 911 N. A Street.

Services were held at 2 pm today from the Frank Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Langston officiating. Burial was in Prairie Lawn cemetry.

Pallbearers were F.M. Rogers, Floyd Anderson, Carl Chamberlain, W. H. Roomsburg, Glenn O. Miller and Ivan Mantooth. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Shofner, singers, accompanied by Mrs. Lavonne Morris sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and Beyond the Sunset."
