Topic: Fern Alden 'Curly' Jones
From: Jerry Laufer jerrylaufer@usa.net
Date: Monday, December 23, 2002 02:17 PM

I am trying to locate information about Fern Alden Jones, aka "Curly". He was born about 1916 near Fredonia, KS and died about 1995. He married Josephine Laufer and had a child, Donna Jo born May 26, 1935 in Chanute, KS. Curly and Josephine were divorced some time after Donna Jo was born. Donna Jo was adopted by Carrie Irene Laufer (Josephine's Sister) and Fowler Knox Brewer in 1939.

Josephine was my Father's (Clyde Isom Laufer) Sister. She died about 1951 in Los Angeles, CA at age 35. I am attempting to fill in some of the blanks in our Family Tree. Donna Jo is my cousin who lives in Eugene, OR. I am living in Glendale AZ at this time.

Does anyone have any information for Curly Jones? If so, please reply to jerrylaufer@usa.net

My Great-Grandmother was an Otto. I am searching for any and all information about the Ottos. I believe the entire family is buried in the Fredonia cemetery. This is what I know about the family: Father was Adolph or Adolphus or Aldreth Otto, Mother was Amelia Otto. Children are Robert, Ernest, George, William, Albert, Eddie, and Agnes (Eddie and Agnes may have died before the family moved to Kansas.) Robert and Ernest were born in New York then the family moved to Michigan and finally to Fredonia. They ran the Fall River Mill. Does this still exist? Where would I get pictures? Also have the name of W. Harold Otto, but have no idea how he is connected to the family. W. Harold Otto had a lot of money and when he died he left it to the University of Kansas. Students of Wilson county who will be attending UK can still apply for the W. Harold Otto scholarship. Does anyone know how he is related to Adolph? W. Harold Otto died in Fredonia in June of 1969. Please contact me if anyone can help me learn more about these Ottos.

I need proof of the birth of Isabell Ann Johnson, born August 3, 1889, Tallyrand Township, near Fredonia. She later married Albert Rollo Marshall, Fredonia, on September 4, 1907. She died on February 20, 1967, and is buried in the Fredonia City Cemetery. She was commonly, and on some official documents, known as "Belle J. Marshall." Albert Rollo and Isabell were my paternal grandparents.

Peggy

You might want to contact

W. A. Rankin Memorial Library
502 Indiana St
Neodesha, KS 66757

and ask them to do a look up in the cemetery listings, and maybe check for obituaries. While they are at it, you might want to ask that they transcribe the 1885 Kansas State Census information for the following families....(the 1982 cost was $1.00 per family)

BOWMAN, A 1-6-1 FR
BOWMAN, Albert 30-15-1 GUI
BOWMAN, J 5-6-1 FR
BOWMAN, Jno H 9-15-1 CHE
BOWMAN, M 4-6-1 FR

MULLIGAN, R. J. 11-12-1 FR

where the code is 1 (line) - 6 (page) - 1 (reel #) FR (city)

FR = Fredonia City (Center Township)
GUI = Guilford Township
CHE = Cheota Township

The above is from

"Index to 1885 State Census Wilson County Kansas"
(Head of households & those with different surnames living with them) by

The Heritage Genealogical Society
PO Box 73
502 Indiana St
Neodesha, KS 66757

Hope this helps

Topic: Wilmer Middleton
From: Nancy Salisbury earthworm@tiadon.com
Date: Friday, July 05, 2002 09:30 AM

I am looking for information on my great, grandfather Wilmer Middleton. I know that he worked at a rock quarry where they ground up rocks to make concrete. The family lived in the Independence , Elk City area . I am looking for the name of the quarry located in Fredonia, Kansas. That would have been in operation during the 1890's . It would have in in Wilson Co. Would like to know where or how to go about getting records of their workers . I am trying to find out what happened to Wilmer Middleton. He went to work one day and was never seen or heard from again sometime before 1910 . My great grandmother said that she thought he fell into the machine they used to grind up the rocks. I want to know if he ever made it to work or if he just left and went somewhere eles.
I could sure use some help with this.
Thanks
Nancy ( Davis ) Salisbury

Looking for any information about Horace Hayes and his wife, Nancy (Barnes) Hayes, who lived in Cedar Township, Wilson County. During 1870, Horace's mother and stepfather, Abigail (Miller) Hayes/Bell/Beebe and Ira Beebe, were living with them. Would especially like to know when this pair died and where they are buried. Abigail was a sister of my great-great-great grandfather, William Miller.
