GRIMES, Dr. William H. (Obit. #2)
Atchison Daily Champion...Feb 1877

Dr. W. H. Grimes, one of the ____ and most respected citizens of our city, has gone the
way of all the earth after an illness of but a few day's duration, full of intense suffering.
Although past the allotted years of man, up to his recent and fatal sickness, he was as
active, healthy and robust as the majority of mankind who have attained but half his years.
But we know not what an hour may bring forth; the weak may become strong, and the
strong fade and pass away.

At one o'clock yesterday a large number of the relatives and friends of the deceased
assembled at the family residence on South Seventh street, to perform the last rites
and obsequies, and pay to a worthy fellow citizen the last sad tribute of respect.
Rev. Frank O. Osborn, Rector of Trinity Episcopal church, conducted the services,
that were very impressive, the chantings from the choir adding a solemnity justly
due the occasion.

The body was in an elegant casket, with a silver centre-piece on which was engraved:
"W. H. Grimes, died Feb. 17, 1877, aged 74 years and 26 days," the whole being
encircled with a wreath of flowers.

After the services, the Odd Fellows took charge of the remains, with Hon. George W.
lick, Hon. Thos. Murphy, Col. Jno. A. Martin, Hon. Wm. C. Smith, Jacob Poehler, Esq.,
and G. B. Buck, Esq., pall bearers, H. Clay Park acting as Marshal. The
procession then formed, and proceeded to Oak Hill Cemetery in the following order:

Phillip's Band.
Subordinate Lodge of Odd Fellows.
Uniformed Patriarchs, Reversed Swords.
Hearse, with Remains.
Rev. F. O. Osborn.
Relatives of Deceased.
Citizens in Carriages.

It was the largest and most imposing funeral cortege that has been witnessed in Atchison
for many years, and plainly evinced the great respect and high esteem in which the
deceased was held by those who had been his daily associates for many years past.

The services at the cemetery were conducted by Rev. Osborn and the Lodge, the order
depositing on the casket the sprig of evergreen, synonymous to the memory of the deceased.
Then the cortege turned away, leaving behind all that was earthly of Dr. Grimes.
