Mangelsdorf, Henry

Henry Mangelsdorf, formerly of the Newcomb Dry Goods Store in Atchison, and brother of August Mangelsdorf, Sr., of Homewood, died at his home in Clayton, N. M., early this morning. He was 90 years of age. Mr. Mangelsdorf suffered a severe attack of flu in November and was unconscious from then until the time of his death.
Carl Henry Mangelsdorf was born at Arnim, Prussia, Germany, October 5, 1840, and came to America in 1856. He was accompanied by his parents, brothers and sisters.
In 1861, he enlisted as volunteer in the Civil War, Company A, 15th Regiment of Missouri infantry, under Captain Matt Goeden. He was wounded and taken prisoner at the Battle of Chickamauga in September, 1883. Until March21, 1864, Mr. Mangelsdorf was held at Richmond, Va., at which time he was one of 500 prisoners who were exchanged for the same number of rebel prisoners, and returned to his company.
He also fought in the battles of Perryville, Ky., October 8, 1862, and Murfreesboro, Tenn. December 31, 1862. An honorable discharge was granted Mr. Mangelsdorf September 21, 1864.
Fifty-five years ago December 28, 1875, Mr. Mangelsdorf married Carrie Held of Atchison. During their residence in Atchison, Mr. Mangelsdorf clerked at the Newcomb Store. Later the family moved to Ellinwood, Kas., where Mr. Mangelsdorf worked with his brother, the late William Mangelsdorf, who his a general store there. Several years later the Henry Mangelsdorfs returned to Atchison and then bought a farm near Lawrence, where they lived until 1908 when Mr. and Mrs. Mangelsdorf moved to Clayton. The post office in the small community where the Mangelsdorfs farmed near Lawrence was managed by Mr. Mangelsdorf.
His widow and seven children survive: Miss Mary Mangelsdorf of the Blair Elevator offices; Carl Mangelsdorf, 301 North 12th Street; Will Mangelsdorf, Kansas City; Mrs. M. J. Poole, Thomas, N. M.; Mrs. Ivan Bartett, Clayton, N. M.; Walter Mangelsdorf of Clayton and Henry Mangelsdorf of Thomas. Mr. Mangelsdorf was the brother of August Mangelsdorf, Sr., and Mrs. Dora Beurman, Lawrence. Mrs. Louisa Lamar, 917 Laramie Street, and Fred Stehwein of Bushton, Kas., are half-sister and half-brother of Mr. Mangelsdorf.
Miss Mary Mangelsdorf will be the only relative from Atchison, who will attend the funeral services which will probably be held Sunday in Clayton.
