for finding, transcribing and contributing the above news article to this web site!More tragic news of World war II came the way of Barber County this week when it was announced that Sgt. Vernon Coss, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Coss of the Isabel neighborhood had been critically wounded on June 7 over France. His wife is the former Pearl Mease of the Nashville community.Sgt. Coss is a radio gunner. He has been in the service for about two years and has been overseas since February. He received his training at San Antonio, Texas and Alliance, Neb. His many friends are hoping that he will soon be on the road to recovery.
News involving another Barber county soldier missing in action was also received this week by the Index. It concerns S-Sgt Ivan L. Cushenbery of Sharon, who was reported missing several weeks ago. The fact that he was doing a good job is attested in the message sent from an eighth AAF liberator station in England which said, "A B-24 Liberator heavy bomber group of which S-Sgt. Ivan L. Cushenbery of Sharon is a member, recently was officially praised by Lt. Gen. James H. Doolittle, commanding officer of the eighth air force, for achievement on its first mission which was against Berlin. The action was the German capital's worst daylight attack of the war and left huge fires raging in the city."
