Donald Landis, A. R. M. 1/C. Kiowa, has lost both legs in World War II, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Landis. Young Landis is quite well known here as he is a relative of Wes Long and Mr. and Mrs. Gar, Parsons. He is now in a hospital somewhere in the South Pacific where both his legs were amputated below the knee.
The young sailor is a graduate of Kiowa high school class of 1939, and has served three years in the Navy January 10, 1944.
The letter in which he told of his injuries follows:
Dear Mother and all:
Will try and write you a few lines this afternoon. I received six letters from you today and was glad to get them all. I owe several letters but it's so hard to write in bed. Maybe I'll be up one of these days soon.
I could tell you what was the matter with me nut I'm afraid you would worry more than what you are. I'm just fine and I have the best of doctors. Guess I'll have to tell you all some time or other so maybe it might as well be now.
Anyway I have lost both of my legs just below the knees. But I'll get a pair of artificial legs and will be able to get around just as well as I ever did. It will be hard for anyone to tell that I'm like I am. So please don't worry, I'll be home one of these days soon.
Love, Donald.
