Hermann Sandbothe, born in Delbrueck, Germany, and his wife Katherine, born in Loose Creek, Missouri, lived in Kiowa, Kansas for an undetermined number of years with their children. My grandmother (Theresa Sandbothe Lueckenhoff) said they lived right along the border for Indian Territory. She and her brother, Hermann, would watch cattle being brought and sit on the fence until the cowboys chased them away. My great-grandmother, Katherine Schramm Sandbothe, died in Kiowa, Kansas in September 1886. My grandmother said her mother died of a broken heart when she was 31 years old. I am sure she was placed in an unmarked grave as her husband, Hermann, packed up the children and came back to Missouri where he placed the children in separate homes. My grandmother, Theresa, was the oldest at 9 years of age and I am sure she had to take care of the younger 4 children, including a month old baby. After Hermann placed the children, he went back to his wanderings and remarried ten years later in Colorado. My grandmother and one of her sisters did not see each other for 17 years.Much of this I heard from my mother as I was not quite 5 when my grandmother, Theresa Sandbothe Lueckenhoff, died. But I do have in her writing the family members and where her mother died.
Thanks to Constance Reichart, great granddaughter of Katherine Schramm Sandbothe, for contributing the above information to this web site.
