Barber County Kansas |
Dr. I.W. Stout and wife came from Ohio to Barber County April 30, 1880. They first settled in Elm Mills township and engaged in the sheep and cattle business. Later they moved to Medicine Lodge and Dr. Stout practiced medicine and later devoted himself to fruit growing; the tornado of 1907 destroyed his fruit farm, so he turned to other fields. He was always interested in public affairs. He was a Democrat in principal and that principal was sacred to him. He knew no compromise; had he done as other men in this age do so often, drift into the dominant party for policy's sake, he would doubtless have been one of the great men of Kansas politics.
Dr. Stout was born in Gilboa, Ohio, April 6, 1846, and died at Medicine Lodge, March 21, 1910. He was married to Elia Hortense Case, on February 4, 1871. They had five sons and one daughter. The daughter died in infancy. The sons were W.E., E.W., W.P., Rexford, and Ray. Ray decided he wanted to see the world, and at an early age joined the Army. He was last heard from in 1908 when he wrote his parents that he was going to Panama.
Two of the sons resided in Medicine Lodge. They were W.E., and Rexford. W.E. was manager of the Metz Lumber Company, at Lake City, and W.P.C. Stout was a harness maker in Harper.
Elisha Worthington Stout, known as E.W., was born June 7, 1874 and died on May 23, 1919. He was married on August 15, 1902, to Miss Elnora Hulick and they had four children - Albert, Wilsey, Margaret and Bernice. Mr. Stout died at the age of 44.

The groom is the second son of Dr. and Mrs. I. W. Stout and a man of sterling worth and lofty character. He has grown from boyhood to manhood here and his friends take pleasure in congratulating him.
The bride is formerly from Dorchester, Nebraska, where her parents now reside, but she has lived in this county during the three past years. Until about a year ago she lived with friends at Lake City, when she came to Medicine Lodge. She has many friends here and elsewhere who wish her a happy life.
