Thanks for the email.
Yes, this is the Mike Massey I talk about on my web pages. I may have well taken the photo you enclosed. I would be interested in any more photos you may have.
Mike was from Dodge City when I met him in Vietnam.
I do remember a lot about Mike. For our first 6 months in Vietnam we were buddies. After about 6 months Mike was shipped to Chu Lai to work as a telephone cable splicer. I remained at the company headquarters in Phu Tai, just outside of the port city of Qui Nhon.
Mike remained in Chu Lai until the end of his tour. The last time I saw Mike was July 1968. He was being reassigned to Fort Hood, Texas. Mike and I had a mutual friend named Bob Oliver from Dallas, Texas. Bob was out of the Army when Mike was posted to Fort Hood. I did find out that Mike and Bob hooked up in Texas. If you could locate Robert Ed Oliver you could find out more about Mike. I have not been able to locate Bob. I have tried to find Mike but with no luck. I now wonder if Mike is still alive and what happened to him.
We had a memorial service for one of our Soldiers who died in Chu Lai. At the service Mike played Taps on a loaned Bugle. Prior to coming to Vietnam Mike was in a Dodge City band called the "Soul Kings."
Mike was not in the 101st Airborne. Our unit designation was Co. D, 40th Signal Battalion, 160th Signal Group, 1st Signal Brigade, USStratcom. Co. D, shipped to Vietnam from Fort Polk, La, in 1966. Mike and I got to Vietnam in July 1966, by airplane.
