Sheriff Haun brought Peter Henningsen and wife up from Kiowa last Thursday to serve a jail sentence pronounced on them by Judge A. Rice of that city. They were convicted of stealing a number of small articles and hiding them around their premises. Mr. Henningsen was sentenced to serve 60 days in jail and pay a fine of $25. Mrs. Henningsen was sentenced to jail for six months and pay a fine of $50. The costs were equally divided between them. The county attorney prosecuted the case.This family has been conspicuous in the justice and probate courts during the past six months. Last summer Mrs. Henningsen served a jail sentence of 30 days for petty larceny, and their little girl was sent away to avoid taking her to the reform school. A few weeks ago two small boys were arrested for stealing money. The older one was sent to the reform school and the young one was sentenced to jail for thirty days. His time will expire on Saturday. Now the old folks are "up against it" good and strong. The officers of Kiowa claim that the family have been carrying on a petty thieving business for more than a year. Mrs. Henningsen, it seems, was the leader, while Mr. Henningsen merely consented to it and indirectly encouraged her and the children. Mr. and Mrs. Henningsen deny the charge very emphatically but the Kiowa officials and courts are positive of their guilt.
They are German people. Mr. Henningsen is a cripple, having lost one foot.
