REEL #M805/KSHS Microfilm Collection

The Barber County Index was a weekly newspaper, published in Medicine Lodge beginning at the end of 1880. At the time this reel begins, Wednesday, January 2, 1889, E.P. Caruthers was publisher; in February of that year, W.G. Musgrove joined with Mr. Caruthers and in August 1890, Mr. Caruthers sold his interest to H. Walker of Elm Mills township. Local news included coverage from the surrounding communities, as well as Medicine Lodge. This reel continues through December 30, 1891. The information has been copied as accurately as possible, but errors may still occur. Minor printing errors have been corrected, but otherwise the information is presented as it originally appeared. Please consult the individual reels to verify an item. I do not have any further information about these individuals or families. Contributed by Ellen Knowles Bisson thebissons@worldnet.att.net.

The attendance was confined exclusively to the relatives and intimate friends of the young couple, owing to the bereavement which so recently befell Mr. Horton in the loss of his mother, whose frequently expressed wish, during her last illness, was that there should be no postponement of the union (upon which her heart was fixed) of her son and the young lady whom she loved as tenderly as a daughter. The bride looked very sweet as she blushingly acknowledged the congratulations which were showered upon her, and the groom was radiant. The bridal presents were many, costly and elegant. At 5:30 p.m., the young couple too the train for the Montgomery White Sulphur Springs, where they will spend some time, and in common with the many friends of both, the Herald hopes that they may be dowered with the choicest blessings which attend true wedlock, the union of hearts as well as hands, through life and through eternity." pg 3, col 5
Died: Mrs. Mary R. Strong died at the Grand Hotel in this city on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. She had, for the past two or three years, been a sufferer from cancer, and all the skill of our local physicians, supplemented by the skill of great specialists of Kansas City and Chicago, had been exerted in her behalf in vain. Several painful operations were performed and she endured the trials with great fortitude, but nature could not withstand the encroachments of the malady, and she peacefully closed her eyes in death. A good woman, a true friend, a devoted mother and a consistent Christian character has gone to her reward. She was 44 years and 8 months old at the time of her death. She was born in Ohio, where she joined the Methodist church at the age of 14 years. Her parents moved to Michigan when she was yet a girl. At the age of 17, she was married to Mr. M. Strong, and in 1880 they removed to Barber county. She leaves a husband and three children, Frank, Harry and Viola. Frank is a grown man; Harry is a lad of 10 years, while Viola is about two and a half years old - too young to realize what a loss she has sustained. She was buried Monday afternoon, Dr. Phillips of the M.E. church conducting the services, assisted by Rev. Cain of the Baptist church and Elder Nicholson of the Christian church. The Masonic order, of which her husband is a member, was represented at the funeral, every member of the Chapter being present. Though the people had, for weeks, been expecting her death, y et when it was announced, they all felt shocked. All who knew her loved her, and though she is released from her long and terrible suffering, all cherished a hope that some change would occur to prolong her life. Death had no terrors for her. She often said that the only reason she cared to live was on account of her infant child. "Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep, From which none 'ere shall wake to weep."

Married: "An Elopement" - It is not often that our little city has a sensation and when one occurs, it is nursed with the greatest tenderness. Each one speaks of it with an air of mystery, as though he knew something but would not, for torture or for wealth divulge what he knows. Whether this mysterious air is to protect the sensitive feelings of others, or whether it is for the purpose of appearing wiser than others, we have never been able to learn. This state of affairs was carried out nicely last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, when there were rumors that Geo. Finney and Miss Laura Vaughn had eloped. The Index reporter gathered all the information obtainable and while it is true that they went away together with the intention of getting married at the first convenient stopping place, there is no reason for any sensation or mystery. They are both of an age to choose for themselves, and so far as we have been able to learn, there would have been no opposition made to their marriage at home if it had been their choice. Miss Vaughn told her parents Saturday that she wanted to go to Sharon Sunday morning to spend the day with a young lady friend. She went to the depot Sunday morning and bought a ticket to Sharon. George Finney and Chas. Palmer were also at the depot and George bought two tickets to St. Louis and gave it out that he and Charley were going to take a trip to that city. They all went off together, but Charley used the Sharon ticket as a blind, while George and his sweetheart used the St. Louis ticket as a blind, while George and his sweetheart used the St. Louis tickets. Charley says Miss Laura wrote a letter to her father, which was to have arrived in the mail on Monday, but it did not come. George and his bride are doubtless settled down in St. Louis, where it is supposed they will make their future home. They are both steady, sensible people, and the Index wishes for them a full share of happiness and prosperity.
