This reel includes five short-lived Barber County weekly newspapers, including the Independent
Star, published for about a month on Tuesdays, beginning February 21, 1888, in Medicine Lodge
by Swartz & Conlisk. The last issue was published on March 13th of that year. The information
has been copied as accurately as possible, but errors may still occur. Minor printing errors have been
corrected, but otherwise the information is presented as it originally appeared. Please consult the
individual reels to verify an item. I do not have any further information about these individuals or

Married: The marriage ceremony was performed at the Grand Hotel last Wednesday by Rev.
Sanderson for Mr. Walter E. Moffett and Miss Hattie E. Feltner, both of Lake City. May they have
a long and prosperous life.

Died: Last Wednesday, we were startled by receiving the intelligence that our grandfather, Mr. DavidWorman, residing at Phillipsburg, Montgomery county, Ohio, was dangerously ill and failing
rapidly, and it was shortly followed up by a telegram announcing his death. This is indeed sad news
to us as we had expected to see him at least once yet before he passed away as it has been three years
since we saw him. He had not been in very good health for the last four or five years, being subject
to acute attacks of rheumatism every winter generally accompanied by other diseases, but we had
expected him to live and enjoy life for many long years. Mrs. Alwilda Swartz, his eldest daughter
and the writer’s mother, who is at present living with us, and Mrs. S.W. Shaw, also of this city and
his youngest daughter, would have very much desired to be at his bed-side during the last hours he
remained on this earth, lovingly administering to his every want, but Providence had otherwise
ordained, and they were denied this by the brevity of his last illness.

Born: Our genial Justice of the Peace, T.B. MacDonald, became the proud and happy father of a
baby girl on last Tuesday night, the 21st.

Died: Capt. Byron P. Ayers died at Sun City on last Tuesday, Feb. 28th. We did not learn the
particulars of his death. He was buried by the G.A.R.s on the following day at the Sun City
cemetery. Mr. Ayers leaves many friends to mourn.

Married: Tuesday evening, by Rev. R. Sanderson, at Medicine Lodge, Miss S.J. Thompson to M.J. Reed, of this city. Mr. Reed is one of our most worthy businessmen and his bride one of Pratt
county’s accomplished ladies. The Register extends a hearty congratulation. Pratt County Register.

Married: Mrs. McGarvan [spelling questionable], of Sexton, daughter of Mr. L.C. Crabb, and Mr.
Gentry were married at the Cling Hotel Tuesday night, Judge Hardy performing the ceremony.

Married: At 12 o’clock on last Thursday, at the residence of the bride’s parents, Mr. E.M. Byerley,
senior member of the dry goods firm of Byerley, Dark & Runyan, and Miss Minnie Young, both of
this city. They boarded the outgoing train for their bridal tour and take with them the best wishes
of their many friends.
