Charles Warren "Chuck" Payne, 77, died June 30, 1999, at Kiowa District Hospital, Kiowa.He was born October 20, 1921, in Kansas, the son of John Franklin and Rosa Josephine Payne. He graduated from Hutchinson High School. He was a plumber and heating and air contractor. He also operated Thoroughbred Trailer Park, Kiowa, for over 40 years.
He belonged to America Legion for 53 years and was vice commander at the time of his death. He also belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Cosmos Lodge No. 278, Shriners and Kiowa Camping Club for several years. He did volunteer work at a cardboard recycling plant and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, receiving a Victory Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.
On January 10, 1948, he married Maxine Elizabeth Veatch at Hutchinson. She survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Kent, Chicago, Illinois; a daughter, Virginia Hasenack, Manzanola, Colorado; two brothers, Paul, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Mark, Topeka; four grandchildren; two great-grand children; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John; and a sister Ruth Roland.
Memorial service was Saturday at United Methodist Church, Kiowa, with the Rev. Bill Dyar presiding. Burial was in Hope Cemetery, Arkansas City.
