MEADE, KS - Dale Guy Garten, 76, died January 9, 2001 at the Meade District Hospital, Meade. Obituary
He was born July 17, 1924 at Sun City, Kansas, the son of Guy William and Ida Laura (Gregory) Garten. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for Ralph D. Mitzel Co., and had been a resident of Meade for 22 years, moving from Bullhead City, AZ. He was in the U.S. Air Force from 1944 to 1946, and served in the South Pacific.
He was a member of the American Legion of Oklahoma City, OK, and the International Union of Operating Engineers of Pasadena, CA.
On March 3, 1943, he married Daysel Murlene Parker at Dodge City, KS. She survives. Other survivors include two sons: Benny Dale Garten of Meade, and Buddy Duane Garten of Newborn, N.C., one daughter: Patricia Pass of Meade; three half brothers: James Garten of Amarillo, TX; Leon Garten of Chickasha, OK., and Bobby Garten of Wichita; two half sisters: Bonnie Shaffer of Aurora, CO and Vera Wood of California; six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Lillie Murlene Campbell.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place. Fidler-Orme Mortuary is in charge of local arrangements.
(Dale’s headstone is in Graceland Cemetery, Meade, Kansas. His ashes were scattered.)

Jerry - Here's the obituary for my brother Dale. He's the son of Guy William Garten and his first wife, Ida Gregory. He's the one who Nate Massey mentioned in his "memories" who played the drums as a child. He also played the steel guitar later in life. The Prairie Sun, Meade, Kansas, February 16, 2007. MEADE - Murlene Parker Garten, aged 80, died Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at her home in Meade, Kansas. She was born February 3, 1927, at Columbus, Ohio. The daughter of Bennie and Alice Vineyard Parker, she was a Kansas resident since she was a little girl. Her father worked for Robbins Ranch, Belvidere, Kansas, for several years, where she was raised.Daysel Murlene Parker Garten
Murlene worked in a state hospital for mentally handicapped in Costa Mesa, California, and in Enid, Oklahoma. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Greensburg, Kansas.
Murlene married Dale Guy Garten March 3, 1943, at Dodge City, Kansas. He passed away January 9, 2001.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia "Pat" Pass, and husband, Jim, of Meade; a son Benny "Butch" Garten and wife Vivien, of Meade; a daughter-in-law Mary Garten, Trenton, North Carolina, five grandchildren: Lisa Johnson and husband Bill, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; James D. Pass, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Tina Tacha and husband, Milton, of Meade; Charles "Chip" Garten, Phoenix, Arizona; Cristina Lynn of Meade, Jennifer Garten of Meade; twelve great-grandchildren: Constance Tacha, Liberal, Kansas; Amanda Balbantin and husband, Pablo, Jr., Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Courtney Tacha and Krysten Hamlin, both of Meade; James D. Pass, Jr. and Jacob Pass, both of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Savyn Mansfield, Meade; Cassondra Lynn, Park City, Kansas; Kyra and Kyndra Pass, both of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; five great great grandchildren: Pablo Balbantin, III, Alexandria Balbantin, Victoria Balbantin, Kadience Munsey, and Jace Shrewsbury.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; her son, Buddy "Bud", her mother, Alice, her father, Bennie, a brother Bennie, a sister, Norma, and a great granddaughter, Lillie.
Cremation has taken place. Services were held Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at 2:00 pm at the Church of the Nazarene, Meade, Kansas, with the Rev. Ron Willard presiding.
Memorials may be sent to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation in memory of Dale, or to Hospice of the Prairie in memory of Murlene, both in care of Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade, Kansas.
