The tragedies of war again descended on the Isabel community Saturday when A/C Gene W. Poland, 21, popular Isabel young man, was killed when his plane collided with one piloted by Thomas J. Ducey, 19, Sewickley, Pa., near the Independence Army Air Base. The crash also claimed the life of Ducey.The death of Cadet Poland brings to three the number of Isabel boys to lose their lives in the air force since the war began. Lt. Vernon Dye was killed Oct. 25, 1942, while on a training flight in Texas and Sgt. Ralph W. Harding met death while flying with a heavy bomber crew in England last December 9.
The accident which caused Cadet Poland's death occurred while the youths were flying routine night training missions.
Cadet Poland was the son of Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Poland, prominent residents of the Isabel community. A graduate of the Isabel high school in 1941, he attended Pratt Junior College, graduating in 1943. An outstanding athlete, he won three letters in high school basketball and one letter in football at Junior College.
The youth was born and raised in the Isabel community, his birth date being Feb. 21, 1923.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at the Isabel Church of Christ. Interment was in the Isabel Cemetery.
