Matilda L Springer
Matilda L. Springer, daughter of Exra and Katherine Hayden, was born near Darlington, Indiana, September 21, 1857 and departed this life at Medicine Lodge, Kansas, December 29, 1939 at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 8 days. When a child of thirteen years she came with her parents to Howard, which is now known as Chautauqua County, Kansas. The journey was made from Indiana by wagon.
She was united in marriage to James W. Springer in January, 1877, in the fall of the same year, Mr. and Mrs. Springer and Grace and Alice Springer, children by a former marriage came to Barber County to make their home.
Their first home in Barber County was a few miles southwest of Medicine Lodge near the H. L. Goddard home. Here these two families lived side by side as good neighbors and experienced the hardships of pioneer life.
Years afterwards when better times came, and to them better times didn't mean good crops and dozens of things that money buys today, but for them better times meant the disappearance of the savage Indian, and the lonely days spent while the fathers were on the roundup. In later years Mrs. Springer enjoyed telling her children these true Indian and range stories and to these children it seemed too much to endure. They would ask why they did not go back to grandma's to visit, especially during the roundup, but for her there was a vision - her own household.
To this union ten children were born, all of whom survive her except Eddson, who preceded her in death in 1933. James W. Springer preceded her in death in 1926.
Soon after marriage she moved with her husband to Barber county where she has made her home.
Those who remain to mourn her departure are, two sons, J. B. and Herbert of Medicine Lodge, seven daughters, Mrs. Hattie Hamlin of Hooker, Okla., Mrs. Bessie Vandruff of Hominy, Okla., Mrs. Cora Warren, Mrs. Maud Jarnagin, Mrs. Lulu Hall, Mrs. Carrie Balding and Mrs. Lucy Ives all of Medicine Lodge; one sister, Jennie Adkins of Blackburn, Okla.
