John Mason Hartzell was born in Hardtner, Kansas, January 23, 1945 to Freda and Kenneth Hartzell. John spent his first 18 years growing up in Medicine Lodge, joining the Presbyterian Church April 1957, and graduating high school in May of 1963. After graduating from Pratt Junior College in May of 1965, John attended a nursing school for a year in Winfield, Kansas, beginning his love of that city.He enlisted into the United States Air Force in 1966 as a security policeman and received an honorable discharge in 1970. His service to his country included 3 years in Germany and the remainder in Massachusetts. John then worked as a private security guard at the Kissing Camel Estates near Colorado Springs, Colorado for 6 months. Returning to Winfield, Kansas, John attended and graduated from Southwestern College in May 1973 with a Bachelors degree in Sociology. After moving to Chanute, Kansas, John completed management training in the Quick Trip Store program and was as assistant manager for a short time but returned to Winfield, Kansas, where he was employed by Automatic Coin for the next 30 years and transferred his membership of the Presbyterian Church to Winfield, Kansas in May 1976.
John Mason Hartzell passed away February 8, 2008, and his memorial service was held Saturday, February 23, at the Presbyterian Church, Medicine Lodge. Surviving John are two sisters, Marie Hopkins of Newton, Kansas, and Evelyn Johnson of Mulvane, Kansas, nephew Greg Hopkins of El Dorado, Kansas, niece Sheryl and Adam Ericson of Nashville, Tennessee, John and Diane Bartholomew of Lamoni, Iowa, Janine and Vash Narula of Carrolton, Texas, two great nephews, two great nieces, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Freda and Kenneth Hartzell, grandparents, Ira Homer and Lulu Belle Hartzell, and Fred and Mamie Hamilton.
