The early part of his life was spent at Cumberland, Maryland. At the age of 23 he crossed the plains to Sutter County, California, going as one of the '49ers. In 1858 he returned to Maryland, remaining there two years, returning to Ohio from whence he moved to Missouri in 1867. In 1883 he came to Kansas, homesteading a farm near Crisfield in Harper county, where he resided until two years ago when he moved with his son, Marcus to Anthony and then to Douglas, Kansas, where he was living at the time of his death.About the year 1860 he was married to Katherine Smalley. To this union were born five children, four of whom survive him. Mrs. W. H. Holden, Amorita, Oklahoma, Mrs. Van Winegarden, Wichita, Charles Doll, Amorita, and Arthur Doll, Wichita. The wife, Katherine, died in the year 1873. On October 5, 1875 he married Martha Jones. To this marriage were born seven children, five of whom are yet living, Mrs. C. T. Bonham, Anthony; Hance Doll, Hood River, Oregon; Frank Doll, Wichita; Allan Doll, Raibar, New Mexico, and Marcus Doll, Douglas, Kansas. Others who mourn his death are twenty three grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. The second wife preceded him in death in 1914.
Mr. Doll became a Christian in early life. He united with a pioneer Presbyterian church at Crisfield, where he retained his membership until, his death. He always showed a deep devotion and faith in his religion.
Thus has ended a long life of usefulness, one who dared the perils and hardships of the frontier to make the great west possible.
The funeral was held at Hazelton Monday afternoon and interment was in Rose HIll cemetery.
