Leigh Groendycke, age 74, of Medicine Lodge, died Tuesday, December 5, 2006 at Select Specialty Hospital, Wichita.She was born January 5, 1932 in rural Medicine Lodge, Kansas, the daughter of Len Talbott and Elma (Hensley) Groendycke.
She attended Sunflower Rural School for 8 years and graduated from Medicine Lodge High School in 1949. After receiving a bachelor of Arts Degree from Emporia State College, she worked as copy writer for KFBI radio in Wichita, then as Continuity Director at Channel 9 Television in Denver, CO. Returning to Wichita, she was employed at KARD, Channel 3 Television, as copy writer and then as traffic manager. She later worked as Office Manager at Channel 8 Television in Wichita before returning to Medicine Lodge in 1975 to care for her parents and manage the family farm.
She was a member of the First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge, former member of AWRT (American Women of Radio and Television), and was listed in Who’s Who of American Women in Radio and Television in the early 1960’s. After returning to Medicine Lodge, she became a member of The Pixley Birthday Club and was a charter member of The Gyp Hills Pilot Club where she was instrumental in helping obtain 9-1-1 for Barber County.
Leigh especially enjoyed visits with her nieces and nephews and loved visiting with friends. She greatly enjoyed music, gardening, playing bridge and scrabble, computers, reading, and traveling. She loved hugs from her family and friends and she was an avid animal lover.
She is survived by daughter, Elizabeth Ann Hartley, Eagle River, Alaska; three sisters, Peggy Vincent, Broomfield, Colorado; Doris Bell and husband Larry of Wichita; and Donna Irvin and husband Gayle of Andover, 23 nieces and nephews, four cats and one dog.
The funeral was held on Saturday, December 9, 2006 at First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge with Pastor Tom Walters officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.
Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church of Medicine Lodge in care of the Larrison Funeral Home, 120 E. Lincoln, Medicine Lodge, Kansas.
