At her residence on Sand Creek, Kingman Co., Kansas, March 8th, 1883,Mary McConnel, mother of James Fox, aged 77 years, 11 months and 9 days.She with her son were among the early settlers of Barbour Co. They moved from Iowa to Barbour Co. in the spring of 1873 and settled on Elm Creek 2 1/2 miles north of Medicine Lodge.
In the spring of 1882 they moved to the place where she died. She was one of those who were in the stockade at Medicine Lodge during the Indian scare of 1871 and withstood the privations caused by the ravages of grasshoppers and destroying powers of hail and drouth with womanly fortitude, but she now sleeps in the new cemetery three miles west of where she was living.
She leaves a son and daughter, James B. Fox and Sarah W. Ozbun, and a large circle of friends to mourn her departure.
