Paul Obe Banister, son of Roscoe Lee and Mabel Blanche (Haynes) Banister, was born on January 22nd 1939 in McDonald Kansas. He went to be with his Savior, Thursday afternoon, February 15th 2007 at the Harry Hynes Hospice Unit of Via Christi Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita at the age of 68 years.Paul attended school in Hayes Ks; he received his GED while serving in the Navy.
In 1957, Paul joined the United States Navy. After he completed boot camp he came to Attica to visit his sister Kaye. While visiting his sister he met the love of his life, Barbara Ann Roth. One afternoon while driving around Attica he ran into a car load of girls, Barbara was the driver. They met and decided to meet at the Dairy Cone for a coke. When Paul got there he was surprised to find that Barbara was alone in the car. She had quickly dropped her friends off at the drug store to meet up with him alone. It was love at first sight. After a short engagement they were married on April 26th 1958 in Alva, Oklahoma.
Soon after they were married, Barbara joined Paul on the Island of Guam where he was stationed. The Navy kept them there for 18 months. After returning to the States Paul was stationed at the National Security Agency in Ft. Meade, Maryland, then in Washington D.C. at the Pentagon. He was honorably discharged in July of 1961 and was released into the Naval Reserve in February of 1962. While living in Maryland, Paul and Barbara had their first daughter, Tamura Kim.
The family then moved back to Kansas and made their way back to Paul’s old stomping grounds, in Hays, Kansas. It was here that Paul and Barbara added a second daughter to their family, Faith Rene’.
Paul then moved his family to the Hutchinson area. Not long after the family got settled in, Carolyn Kaye was born, making their family complete. Paul attended Cosmetology school in Hutchinson. His career "cranking hair" as he called it, had begun.
The Banister family moved to Medicine Lodge in 1970, where Paul purchased a Beauty Shop. During this time the family began attending church at the First Assembly of God. Paul felt the call to become a minister and soon began college with the Berean School of the Bible. After living in Medicine Lodge for 8 years the family moved to Attica where Paul became the pastor of the Assembly of God Church there. He served as pastor for them for 13 years.
Later Paul began filling in at the Christian Church in Attica and soon after became their Pastor. He filled the pulpit there for 11 years; retiring only after ALS took him from the pulpit he so loved.
Paul truly showed his community the love of Christ through his love and compassion for those in need. He loved his community and was always there for those who may need a helping hand, no matter if or what their church affiliation was. He was a friend to all and never met a stranger.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Marla Jean Banister and one brother, Durward (Dud) Banister.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Barbara of the home in Attica; his daughters, Tamura Owen and her husband Mike of Odessa Texas, Faith Starks and her husband Rusty of Freeport Kansas; Carolyn Wyatt and her husband Eugene, also of Attica; 9 grandchildren, Larissa, Jacob, Sarah, Madison, McKynzie, Mariah, Michalynn, Trevor and Russell; one great granddaughter, Brecklyn; sisters, Kaye Barrett and her husband Richard of Belleville Ks, Tharen McKee of Broomfield Co.; his brother Terry Banister and his wife Mary; and a sister-in-law; June Banister of Florida; other relatives and church family and many, many friends.
Funeral services were held on Monday, February 19, 2007 at the Christian Church in Anthony with Chaplain J. Tal Tittsworth and Pastor John Schnelle officiating. John Schnelle sang "The Holy City" and "On Eagle’s Wings." The congregation sang "Blessed Assurance." Judy Bane accompanied on the piano and Dixie Thompson accompanied on the organ.
Honorary casket bearers were Jacob Owen, Trevor Starks, Russell Starks, Leonard Dark, Don Gill, Jerry Bonner, Kenny Dixon, Ralph Wyatt and Mike Loreg. Casket bearers were Eugene Wyatt, Rusty Starks, Mike Owen, Larry Lichlyter, John Eck and Roger McCreery. Military graveside services were at Attica Cemetery with Military Honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Memorials in memory of Paul, may be given to Keith Worthington ALS Chapter, Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, Attica Christian Church or Attica Long Term Care, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
