HERR
Michael HERR
The Ellinwood Leader - Ellinwood, Barton County, Kansas, 17 September 1936.
Michael Herr, a pioneer of Barton County, was laid to rest in Raymond, Sept 4. For a number of years he had made his home with his children in various parts of the United States, and was visiting his daughter, Mrs. Carrie Hodges, in Edinburg, Texas, at the time of his death, Aug, 31.

Michael Herr was born in Buffalo, N. Y., June 20, 1849, and while still a small boy moved to Iowa, with his parents. In 1874 he and his sister came to Barton county and homesteaded 8 miles northeast of Ellinwood. It was a bad year, as far as Kansas was concerned. 1874 was the big grasshopper year, and the county was stripped of all its green stuff by locust. Mr Herr stuck, and established a farm, so successfully that four years later he was able to return to Iowa and marry Miss Ellen Wilson. The country still was wild at that time.

Roving bands of Indians kept the settlers nervous, and there was one time when a real Indian scare persuaded Mr Herr and his neighbors to band together, expecting an attack, but the Indians chose another route, much to the relief of the settlers.

The country abounded in game and the soil was rich, producing good crops when the grasshoppers, the droughts, or hailstones did not bring disaster. The Herr's worked their land wisely and prospered in spite of the hardships.

Of the eight children born to the couple a son and two daughters preceeded Mrs. Herr in death. Mrs. Herr passed away in Dec, 1915. Since then Mr. Herr had made his home , the greater part of the time, with his daughters, Mrs. D.A. Nevius and Miss Celestia Herr of Hutchinson. Other children who survive are Mrs. Delila M. Dailey of Chase, Mrs. Julia Luker of Keeline, Wyo., Mrs, Carrie Hodges of Edinburg, Texas, and Mr Charlie Schurr, who grew to manhood in the Herr home. One sister, Mrs. Lanie Shackner, and two brothers, Phillip and Henry Herr, all of California, also survive.
