UNRUH
Barney UNRUH -- Pawnee Rock Herald -- Vol. II No 22 -- Thursday, December 17, 1914
Released From His Suffering
Again has the grim reaper paid this community a visit and taken from it one of its most highly respected citizens in the personage of Barney P. UNRUH, who lived with his family southeast of Pawnee Rock. At the time of his departure, which sad event occurred on Saturday morning, Mr. UNRUH was 70 years old.

At the age of 16, he was baptized in the Mennonite church and remained a faithful adherent to the principles that permit a passport into the realms above. He was married to Helena DIRKS on Nov. 8, 1870. To this union eleven children were born, two taken in infancy. A daughter, Miss Carrie was laid to rest two years ago. The remaining children along with the wife mourn his departure; Ben B., Jacob, Henry H., Mrs. Abe (Katie) SIEBERT, Mrs. George (Susie) DIRKS of Greensburg, Misses Anna, Lizzie and Lena.

Coming over from the old country in 1874, Mr. and Mrs. UNRUH first settled in McPherson, later moved to Barton County, where the family still resides. The funeral services were held at the New Jerusalem Church in this city on Sunday afternoon and were largely attended by the neighbors and friends who were desirous of paying a last tribute to one who had always lived an exemplary life in their midst. Services were conducted by Rev Benj. P. UNRUH. At the close of the solemn services all were permitted to look for the last time on the face of the departed; then the sad cortege moved on to our silent city. Nothing on earth is changed, only a loving husband and father is gone. Only the memory of a father is left, yet how sweet its influence. For after all, death is but the slipping off of the outer body. Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved relatives in their hour of sorrow.

WACASER
Sadie GRIFFITH WACASER -- Great Bend Register -- Thursday, March 24, 1904
Sadie GRIFFITH WACASER was born in Pettis County, Missouri on the third day of July, 1876, removing to Kansas in March 1879 with her parents, who then settled in Barton County on a farm afterwards locating in Great Bend in June 1885. Here they have since made their home. Her father, Theodore GRIFFITH, has filled several high offices of public trust in the administration of the affairs of the city and county and is at present postmaster of Great Bend.

In September, 1902, Sadie went to Las Animas, Colorado, for a visit with an aunt who lived there. While on that visit she met Mr. H. M. WACASER and on the first day of March, 1903, they were united in holy wedlock. They lived in Las Animas for a very short time only, when Sadie made her parents a visit and on her return she and her husband located at Rocky Ford, removing later to La Junta, Coroardo, where they lived until failing health induced her to return to her Kansas home. She hoped this change of climate would restore her health, but alas, it was too late. The disease that pursued her had made such ravages upon her strength and vitality that she was unable to rally and at the solemn hour of midnight on Sunday, the 20th day of March, 1904, she yielded up her spirit to the God who gave it and quietly sank to rest in His everlasting arms. The deceased was converted and united with the M.E. church during the Shawhan revival in 1891.

Sadie is the first to pass away of a family of eight children born to Mr. and Mrs. GRIFFITH. She was always of a bright and happy disposition, apparently robust and the picture of health. As a child and during her girlhood she was a devoted worker in the Sunday School, and the girls of her class, all of them now women grown and many of them now married and moved away, will learn with profound sorrow of her untimely death. Her sorrowing husband now makes his home in our midst and to him and to the bereaved family the entire community extends a cordial sympath, directing them for consolation to the ever-living spring of faith which strengthens us, with confidence, and composure to a blessed immortality.

The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist Church, Rev. A. B. Hestwood officiating. The attendance was large. The floral offerings were profuse and very beautiful.

WALTER, Joseph Andrew
Joseph Andrew WALTER, Date of Death Oct 24, 1924, Signed by D.G. Heckman MD
His death occurred in Wichita at his room in the Pacific Hotel, and his body was discovered shortly afternoon when attempts to secure an answer from repeated knocking at the door had failed and the room was entered by hotel employees.

Mr. WALTER had gone to Wichita Thursday to visit with an old army comrade who was sick, hoping he would be able to cheer him some. Early in the summer Mr. Walter had felt that his health was failing and he went to Colorado Springs where he spent the summer and he came home much improved and rid of the idea that he was near the end of life's journey.

Two of Mr. Walter's daughters left Great Bend, last night for Wichita and they will probably return with the body this evening. It is possible that one of his sisters may come from Pennsylvania to attend the funeral and in that case the funeral will probably not be held before Tuesday or Wednesday. The date of the funeral cannot be announced today.

Two things in particular had weighed on his mind and made him entirely different from the happy sort of a man he had always been, one of them being the condition of his wife, Who for four years has been ailing and the other the unsettled condition of politics and the way in which he felt many of his old friends had looked upon his stand in the National campaign. It was to get a rest partly from that feeling that he had gone to Wichita, Kansas, and this part of the state until the last year or two he had occupied a prominent part in all political matters though never being an office holder himself. His administration of the G.A.R. during his term as department Commander for Kansas. He was always the foremost in working for the cause of the veterans of the civil war.

He leaves a wife, nine children, six daughters and three sons, and friends everywhere.

WARD
Joseph N. WARD -- Barton County Democrat
Another old settler has passed away. Joseph N. WARD was born in Belmont Co, Ohio, Dec 4th 1815. At the age of 16 he went to Woodsfield and engaged in the saddler and tanery trade, then went to W. Va. He was married at Parkersburg to Miss Sarah WILLYARD, then removed to Mercer Co. Pa., where he engaged in farming, then in 1853 removed to Ind. and in 1867 removed to Mo. and in 1874 came to Barton Co., Kansas where he located on a homestead near Claflin and has been a citizen of this county ever since. His sickness was only of a few days, and surrounded by his children, grandchildren and kind neighbors he fell asleep in Jesus and as he termed it entered into the glory world to join the companion of his youth, who preceded him seven years ago. He joined the M.E. Church sixty-nine years ago at the age of twenty-one and lived a Christian life all those years. He dedicated his life to the service of the Lord, never looking back, but pressing onward ever guiding the foot-steps of his children and loved ones, teaching them the way to that life immortal, he lived a prayerful life and would often say: "Why can't I go home" I am ready and waiting and trusting and longing for that rest in the sweet bye and bye." We will miss the kind voice of the sweet patient father we all loved so much, the bright smiles he gave us and asking us to meet him in glory and while we know that he can't come back to us, we can go to him. Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church, preached by Brother Sutherland of The Congregational Church in the absence of Rev. Hestwood. Five sons and three daughters survive him.

WILSON
[Infants] WILSON -- Hoisington Dispatch -- Thursday, July 25, 1889
[compiler's note: This article, though dealing with the deaths of three newborns, is an example of how Kansas newspapers sometimes went overboard in promoting their communities!]
On Friday evening triplets, three boys, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Al WILSON. Two of the little ones died on Saturday and the third one on Tuesday. An occurance of this kind is seldom recorded and it only goes to show who wonderfully prolific this part of Kansas is. Mrs. WILSON is getting along nicely.

Guidelines for submitting a Barton County, Kansas
obituary or death notice

Do you have an old obituary or short death notice of a Barton County resident tucked away in a scrapbook, trunk or file. Take it out and share it with the rest of us! Type up your obituary and email it to us and we'll post it here. Just observe the following guidelines...
To enter your Barton County obituaries:

1- Email them to us at wrs@cjnetworks.com. Put BARTON CO OBITUARY in your subject line.
2- On first line put name of deceased. Use the name in the obit. If you want to rename the individual to clarify who they are add that name in parenthesis after the obit name. Look below for examples of this. Do this to include maiden names or full names for individuals given initials only in the obit.
3-On the second line put the name of the newspaper, newspaper's town, date of issue where obituary is found, page, column, if known. PLEASE.... Barton County residents only... A resident is defined here as an individual who lived in Barton County for part of his/her life.
4-Type out the obituary capitalizing all SURNAMES. Don't put given names or locations all in caps, just the surnames. Now here's the hard part. Limit your obituary to less than 350 words. This may be hard. Some obituaries go on and on. Figure out what to keep... what to drop. If we get something too long we'll have to send it back to you for editing.
5-Put "submitted by [your name and email address]" at the end. If you want to, include your postal address as well.

6- It's ok to edit the obits you submit. If you want to add maiden names, correct/add dates or other information do so. Just put any added information in [brackets]. That lets the reader know that this is something not in the original obituary. Just remember to keep the whole thing under 350 words.

It's as simple as that!
