Although Butler County was an original Kansas county created August 30, 1855,
it was not officially organized until Feb. 11, 1859. The county was named in
honor of Andrew Butler, a U.S. Senator from South Carolina, who coauthored the
Kansas–Nebraska Act. The boundaries underwent many changes through the years.
El Dorado is the county seat.
