CHASE COUNTY EXTENSION ,

Chase County Farm Bureau began in 1916 with
Preston Hale hired as the first Agricultural Agent.
The name was later changed to County Extension.
In 1920 there were pig clubs along with poultry, corn and kafir clubs.
C.F. Gladfelter became County Agricultural
Agent, and he organized the baby beef club. Twenty members started with sixteen of the steers going
to the American Royal. George Carpenter of Matfield Green exhibited a Hereford Steer that placed
ahead of all the Kansas steers in the American
Royal.
1926 was the first year we had organized 4-H clubs. There were four that started that year. Diamond with C.H. Davis, leader; Blue Ribbon 4-H
Club of Elmdale with Mrs. C.L. Simmons, Leader;
Cottonwood A. J. McCabe, leader; South Fork 4-H
of Matfield Green with Mr. H.H. Carpenter, leader.
In 1929 the number of clubs increased to nine with
169 members, there are now 141 members and 7 4-H
clubs, in 1972.
The first Home Economics Agent was Leona
Tibbetts in 1938. The Extension offices are in the
Chase County Courthouse with Steve Westfahl,
County Extension Director and Agricultural Agent
and Sally L. Olson as Home Economist.
