Alfred, Anna M
Anna M Alfred, 90, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Claridge Court, Prairie Village, Kansas.
Funeral services were, Feb. 18, 2002, at Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home, Cottonwood Falls, with Pastor Dawn Gorges officiating. Burial was in Prairie Grove Cemetery, Cottonwood Falls.
Anna, the daughter of T. Earl and Georgia R. Umpstedt Miser, was born Nov. 14, 1911, in Bazaar. She graduated from Jane C. Stormont Hospital in Topeka as a registered nurse in 1933. She was a Lyon County Health Department nurse until 1940 when she entered the Army Nurses Corp in Fort Benning, Ga. She was sent to the Indo-China Burma Theatre as Chief Nurse to setup hospitals throughout the region. She returned home in December 1943 and was made Chief Nurse at Fort Devin Hospital until 1944.
In 1945 she was sent to the Philippines and Okinawa. In 1947, she transferred to the U S Air Force and was made Chief Nurse at Randolph Field in San Antonio, Texas.
She married John H Alfred in San Antonio in 1952. She was sent to Morocco that same year for two years, returning to Lackland Field in San Antonio until she retired in 1961.
She is survived by two sisters, Cora E Gasaway of Terre Haute, Ind., and Helen M Lynch of Shawnee Mission; nine nephews and seven nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and three brothers, George Miser, Sam Miser and Jesse Miser. Memorials can be made to the American Red Cross.
