Armstrong, Delbert Avery Delbert A. Armstrong, 88, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, while loading bales in rural Matfield Green.
Delbert Avery Armstrong, the son of Clarence and Etta Kinsey Armstrong, was born Aug.
4, 1917, at
Wichita. He was
married to
Marjorie McCrain. They were divorced.
He served in the United States Marines during World War II. He retired, after 24 years, as a Captain in the Wichita Police Department. He then worked as a Municipal Court Clerk for the city of Wichita for 10 years. After he returned to Chase County, he served as a Chase County Commissioner for District #1 from 1994 until 1998.
He attended the
Matfield Community Church and was a member of the Eagles Lodge, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion in Wichita.
He is survived by a son, Ronald L. Armstrong of Matfield Green; four sisters, Mareta Smith of Wichita, Barbara Cullins of Salina, Genova Hendrickson of Commerce City, Colo. and Peggy Parker of Douglas; and one grandson.
He was preceded in-death by his parents and a brother, Harold Dean Armstrong.
The funeral service was Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Chapel, Cottonwood Falls. The Rev. Billie Blair of the Tallgrass Spiritual Retreat Center officiated. Cremation followed the service with inurnment in
the Matfield Green
Cemetery at a later date.
