Austin, Fred J Jr Fred J. Austin Jr., 76, of Topeka, died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka.
Fred, the son
of Fred J. and
Nora Ward
Austin, was born
Dec. 3, 1928, at Cottonwood Falls.
He married Myrna A. Harman on Dec. 15, 1989, at Cottonwood Falls.
He owned the Standard Gas Station in Cottonwood Falls and was a dispatcher for the Chase County Sheriff's Department. Prior
to attending Emporia State University, he served in the U.S. Army in Japan at the end of World War II.
He played saxophone in the Rhythm Merchants, a swing band consisting of merchants of Cottonwood Falls.
He was a member of the Strato Jets Square Dance Club and volunteered at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. He ended his career as chief dispatch for Troop B of the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Survivors include his
wife, Myrna, of the home; and nephews, Ronald Scott, Larry Scott, Lynn Schmitt, Robert Schmitt, Mike Austin and Rick Austin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles Austin; and sisters, Lorene Scott and Aileen Schmitt.
A memorial service was held Monday, Aug. 29, at Midland Day Care Flower Garden in Topeka.
