Baker, Bertha Marie Russell Bertha Baker, 94, of Matfield Green died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at the Chase County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Cottonwood Falls.
Bertha Marie Russell was born Jan. 29, 1911, to Nate and Clara Brandley Russell, in Chase County. She married Edward Tinkham Baker Feb. 4, 1929. He preceded her in death.
She and her husband owned and operated the cafe and telephone office in Matfield Green. Bertha worked with the Chase County Extension Council for several years and was a cook at the service area on
the turnpike and Matfield Green schools.
She was a member of the Matfield Community Church and the New Century Club of Matfield Green.
She is survived by two sons, Carl Baker of Emporia and Robert Baker of Garden City; two daughters, Clara Jo Talkington of Matfield Green and Lequita Joy Nelson of Cassoday; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Buck Russell; five sisters, Jacquita "Jack" Burton, Helen "Brownie" Pinkston.
Clara Lois "Jonas" Rollins, Bun Russell and Inez "Mex" Fisher; and a grand-daughter, Kathy Marie Baker.
The funeral service was April 9 in the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home Chapel in Cottonwood Falls with the Rev. Pat Ireland of First Presbyterian Church in Cottonwood Falls officiating. Internment was in Bazaar Cemetery.
