Blender, Philip A
Philip A. Blender, 84,
died Tuesday, Dec. 23,
2003, at Newman Regional
Health, Emporia. A
Celebration of His Life
service was conducted by
Pastor George Gardner at
Saffordville United
Methodist Church, Dec. 26
with Masonic Services following the service. Private
interment was at Memorial
Lawn Cemetery, Emporia.
Philip Adam Blender
was born Nov. 23, 1917, at
Keokirk, Iowa, the eldest
son of Philip and Flora
Huenergardt Blender. He
moved, with his family, to a
ranch in Chase County,
near Saffordville, when he
was ten years old. He
attended Carman Grade
School and graduated from
Toledo Township High
School. He attended
Kansas State Teachers
College.
He married Ruth Jones
on Oct. 27, 1946, at her parents' home near Hartford.
She died Sept. 11, 2002.
He was a rancher/stockman in the Flint Hills until
1985 when he and Ruth
semi-retired and moved to
Okeene, Okla. They
returned to the ranch in
1993.
He attended the
Saffordville United
Methodist Church, was a
member of the Okeene,
Okla. United Methodist
Church and the United
Methodist Men. He was a
member of the Falls
Chapter #25 Order of the
Eastern Star, the Okeene
Masonic Lodge #357, and a
60-year member of the
Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M.,
Emporia #12, following the
consolidation with the
Saffordville Masonic Lodge
#395.
He served as an
Elder of the First
Presbyterian Church of
Cottonwood Falls. He was
active in community
affairs, serving as ASC
committeeman; member
and leader of the Toledo 4-
H Club; Chase County
Farm Bureau; Chase
County Extension Council;
and the Saffordville school
board. He served many
years on the Board of
Directors of the Council
Grove Production Credit
Association. He and his son
received the Kansas
Bankers award for Soil
Conservation in 1982.
He is survived by a son,
Howard Blender of
Emporia; a daughter,
Sharon Gardner of
Moorhead, Minn.; and
seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in
death by his parents and
two brothers, lst Lt.
Howard Eldon Blender and
Ellis Ray Blender.
