Carmichael, John P

John P Carmichael Drowns at home in Georgia

John P Carmichael, 24 years of age, of East Point, Ga., a former Chase County boy, was drowned while swimming in Appling's Lake near Atlanta, according to information just received here by friends of the Carmichael family. A sudden attach of heart failure is believed to have been the cause of death as the body was recovered from the lake by the young man's companions a few minutes after he sank and no water was found in his lungs. The deceased was born in Strong City and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. P. P. Carmichael, former residents of this county. Besides his parents he is survived by two sisters and one brother who are Irma, Mae and Robert Carmichael, all of Georgia.

John P Carmichael was born August 21 1900 at Strong City, Kansas, and died June 20 1924.

He was an elevator electrician and builder by trade. A man of smiles and generous dispoition and was loved by all who knew him.

John came home from work Friday evening feeling badly. He was sitting on the porch when a automobile driven by friends came along and wanted him to go to Appling's Lake to swim. He told them he was not feeling well and did not care to go, but they insisted. As he left he told his father he would be back by nine-thirty. He went to the pond and dived off a couple of times. He became sick and a friend of his told him he had better sit on the bank awhile. In a short time when his friend returned John was not there.

He searched for him but could not find him. A call of the pond was given and no answer came. A man called out" I have stepped on a body." It was John. He was taken from the water and given all the help anyone could give but of no avail.

The doctors pronounced him dead and death was due to heart failure as no water was found in the lungs.

The funeral was held at the home of his parents, 119 Ware St., East Point, Ga., Tuesday, June 24th. The many beautiful flower emblems speak the sympathy of friends and loved ones. His father, Mr. P P Carmichael, has been in the wholesale business for nearly sixteen years in East Point, Ga.

Those attending the funeral from out of the city were his grandmother, Mrs. John Airhart, Topeka, Kansas; Mrs. John W,. Alvord, Ulysses, Kansas; and Mrs. Walter Merrill, Dayton, Ohio.

John Carmichael will be remembered in Cottonwood Falls, as he with his brother, Robert, and sister, Mae attended school here during the winters and stayed with their grandparents, Mr and Mrs. John Airhart.
