Cowdery, William Robert Jr

William Robert Cowdrey Jr., 72, of Ottawa, died Monday, May 22, at Ransom Memorial Hospital, Ottawa.

William Robert Cowdrey was born Aug. 7, 1933, at Newton, to William Robert Sr. and Marie Christine (Hunter) Cowdrey. He attended schools in Morris and graduated from Emporia High School in 1951 and from the University of Kansas in 1960.

He married Shirley Mayetta Schwilling on Aug. 1, 1959, at Topeka. She survives. He served in the United States Army, 1953-55. He worked as a commercial credit specialist for Phillips Petroleum Company of Bartlesville, Okla., retiring in 1986. Since his retirement he had worked as an associate for Watkins Products. He was previously employed by the Santa Fe Railroad as a fireman.

Other survivors include: a daughter, Lynne Marie Tatum of Chester, N.J.; a son, William Robert "Bob" Cowdrey; and four grand-children. He was preceded in death by: his parents; step-mother, Jennie (Robinson) Cowdrey; and brother, Joseph Cowdrey.

Cremation has taken place. The family will meet with friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, at the Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa. His remains will be scattered at the Schwilling family farm in Chase County. The family suggest memorials to the National Kidney Foundation of Kansas and Western Missouri c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, KS 66067.
