Cuthbert, Richard

Richard Cuthbert died at noon Thursday at his home, 1235 Highland Street, Emporia, followintg a stroke of paralysis two weeks ago.

Richard Cuthbert, son of David and Hannah Cuthbert, was born in Yorkshire, England, Jun 30 1821. In early manhood he was employed as foreman in a big English estate. He married Miss Mary Bell in 1843 and in 1851 they came with the two little daughters, to New York, where Mr. Cuthbert conducted a dairy for three years. The family then moved to Buchanan, Mich., here Mr. Cuthbert engaged in farming. In 1870 the family came to Kansas, settling near Cottonwood Falls.

Mr. Cuthbert continued in the farming and stock raising business and became a landholder. Mrs. Cuthbert died in 1890. He married Mrsl S J Teegarden of Lisbon, Ohio four years later. After a short residence on a farm in Chase county, they moved to Emporia. Mr. Cuthbert has been retired from active work since that time.

During his long residence in Kansas, Mr. Cuthbert had become widely known, especially in Lyon and Chase Counties. For many years he has been director of the First National Bank of Cottonwood Falls. He attended a meeting of the directors the week before he was taken sick. He was a man of sound judgement and was possessed of those qualitites of which make and hold friends. Although he had been retired from active work for many years, his time had been spent profitably, and he kept his health and cheerful spirits to the end. Mr. and Mrs Cuthbert had been members of Primitive Methodist Church in England, and in Emporia they united with the First Methodist Church, which they attended regularly.

Mr. Cuthbert reached his extreme age by living a clean life, free from dissapation. Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Hannah Hunter, of Cottonwood Falls. His four grandchildren are Richard, Mrs. Eugene Patterson, Cottonwood Falls; Mrs. Guy Arnold, Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Clarence Wilson of Aberdeen, Wash. He leaves fourteen great-grandchildren.

The funeral services were held at the home at 12:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon. The services were in charge of Rev. H W Hargett and the singing was by the choir of the First Methodist Church. The body was brought to Cottonwood Falls, where the Cuthberts formerly lived and additional services were held in the Methodist Church at that place at 3 o'clock. These services also were in charge of Mr. Hargett. The pallbearers at Cottonwood Falls were directors of the First National Bank at that place. Interment was in the Prairie Grove Cemetery.
