Daggett, Ralph L

The funeral for Former Emporia Mayor Ralph LeRoy Daggett, 88, of Emporia was Dec. 1, 2001, in the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home Chapel. Lee Hoskins conducted the service. Burial, with services conducted by American Legion Ball-McColm Post 5 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Lowry-Funston Post 1980, was in Reading Cemetery.

Mr Daggett died Nov 27, 2001 at Via Christi St Francis hospital in Wichita. Mr. Daggett taught English and journalism at Emporia State University and earlier he worked in the university's publication bureau. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He served four terms as mayor of Emporia and was a member of the Emporia City Commission from 1967 to 1977.

Ralph LeRoy Daggett, the son of Roy C and Beulah Mae Robinson Daggett, was born Jan. 2, 1913, at Reading.

He married Lucile Sielert on May 26, 1934, at Cottonwood Falls. He received a bachelor's degree from Kansas State University and a master's degree from Emporia State and completed graduate work at the University of Iowa. Mr. Daggett was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He also was a member of Ball-McColm Post 5, VFW Post 1980, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2587. the Sons of the American Revolution, Sigma Delta Chi honorary journalism fraternity and the Society of Professional Journalists, Phi Kapps Phi honors fraternity, First Families of Rhode Island, American Association of Retired Persons, American Associaton of University Professors and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees of Emporia. He was named the Gazette Man of the Week on Sept. 24, 1966.

He is survived by his wife; and a daughter, Ralphea Daggett Hill of Emporia. Two brothers and a grandson died earlier.

Memorial contributions to Emporia State University for English scholarships or the Flint Hills Technical College for automotive department scholarships may be sent to the funeral home.
