BERTHA ESTELLA HAWKINS DAWSON
Former Chase County resident Bertha Estella Hawkins Dawson, 89, a recent resident of the Providence Place Care Center in Kansas City, Kan., died June 17, 1998, at the care center.
Mrs. Dawson lived three years at Burdick, 38 years at Elmdale, then moved to Cottonwood Falls, where she lived until 1996, when she moved to the Twin Oaks retirement center in Lansing. In July 1997 she moved to the Homestead assisted living community at Leavenworth, and in May 1998 she moved to Providence Place at Kansas City.
Bertha Estella Hawkins, the daughter of Fred and Mary Amy Green Hawkins, was born Aug. 16, 1908, on a farm south of Clements. She married George Thomas Dawson on Jan. 28, 1932. He died earlier.
Mrs. Dawson was a member of the Cottonwood Falls United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and was a trustee. She was treasurer for 14 years of the United Methodist Women. She was a past matron and 64-year member of the Falls Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Cottonwood Falls; past president of Friendly Circle; a member of the Alpha Study Club and the Extension Unit; and a leader of 4-H for three years at Elmdale.
She is survived by two sons, three daughters, 15 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren.
The funeral was Saturday in the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home in Cottonwood Falls. The private burial was in Elmdale cemetery.
Memorial contributions to the Chase County Senior Center in Cottonwood Falls may be sent to the funeral home.
