Dryden, Newton Clark

Newton Clark Dryden, 72, a resident of Longton, died July 3, 2004, at the Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline. Newton, the son of James Andrew and Gertrude Luella Smith Dryden, was born Jan 15, 1932, on a farm west of Emporia. He attended rural school and grew up in Lyon County. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. After his discharge he married Louise Marks at Emporia. They divorced.

In 1968 he served a brief time in civilian service while stationed in Vietnam. After returning to Emporia, he was employed at the IBP plant and also worked for the city of Emporia.

On July 8, 1977, he married Susan Marie Talkington Collins at Emporia. They moved to Caney in 1979 and Longton in 1984.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Kathy Alexander of Emporia and Robin Frost of Plattsmouth, Neb.; a step-son, Dustin Collins of Longton; a step-daughter, Candy Collins of Longton; a sister, Delna Seese of Washington state; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard with Chaplain Ron Sloan of Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice officiating. Private interment was held. Memorial contributions to the Elk Manor Nursing Home of Moline or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice may be left with the funeral home.
