Faris, Henry Clay

OBITUARY OF HENRY CLAY FARIS

Henry Clay Faris was born in Andrew County, Missouri, on October 7th, 1857. His parents were Joseph G. and Mary Ann Faris and he was oldest of twelve children. He passed . away at his home in Elmdale, Kansas, on March 16th, 1938, at the age of 80 years, 5 months and 9 days.

In the spring of 1860 he came to Kansas with his parents, locating at Council Grove in 1864. The family moved to Chase County in 1870, and lived on what was then known as the Hays farm.

Mr. Faris came to Elmdale in 1883 and it has since been his home. He was employed in the hardware stores of Evan Salter and Charles Kline until 1906, when he started in business for himself. For 50 years he has been in the hardware business in Elmdale.

On June 6th, 1900 he was married to Ida M. Richter, who died on December 28th, 1928. Mr. Faris is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Fred Faris, also five sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Osman, of Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Bessie Brakey of Guthrie, Okla.; Mrs. Ida M. Ragdle, of Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Josephine Sayre of Cottonwood Falls, and Mrs. Winnifred Price of Manchester, Okla.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Elmdale on Friday afternoon, March 18th, at 2 0'clock, Rev. Dwight L. Patton of the Cottonwood Falls Methodist church, being in charge of the service.

The pall bearers were Paul Wood, Bruce Umberger, D. M. Narramore, Geo. T. Dawson, O. E. Giger, and Chas. Herrick. A quartette composed of Mrs. Augusta Way, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Schneider and Mr. Duncan McAlpine sang, accompanied by Mrs. T. F. McKee jr., at the piano.

Well Known Hardware Man Had Been Ill Long Time

Funeral Is Friday.
H. C. Faris, 80, one of Chase County's pioneers, died today (Wednesday) at noon at his home in Elmdale after an extended illness. He had been confined to his home since last fall.

Funeral services will .be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Methodist church at Elmdale. Interment will be in Prairie Grove cemetery.

Mr. Faris came to this county in 1859 with his parents Mr and Mrs. Joseph Faris, and has lived at Elmdale practically all the time since. For many years he operated a hardware store at Elmdale. He took an active part in community affairs and served on the city council and as mayor on numerous occasions.

Surviving Mrs. Faris are a Son, Fred at Marion ; an Mrs. Winnie Price, Manchester; Okla.; Mrs. C. A. Sayre, Cottonwood Falls; Mrs. Bessie Brakey. Guthrie, Okla.; Mrs. Becky Osman, Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Ida Radel, Kansas City, Mo.
