Gammel, George Robert Jr
George Robert Gammel
Jr., 70, of Topeka died April
18, 2004, at Topeka Health
Care Nursing Home, where
he resided.
He was born Oct. 10,
1933, in Cottonwood Falls,
the son of George Robert
and Dorothy Katheryn
Ryherd Gammell. He
attended Chase County
Community High School,
where he was active in a
variety of sports and extra-
curricular activities. He
graduated in 1951 and
went on to attend Kansas
State University, where he
was active in the AFROTC
and the KSU Livestock
judging team serving as a
member until his death. He
graduated from KSU in
1955 and received a bachelor's of science degree.
Mr. Gammell joined the
Air Force upon graduation
and was commissioned as
first lieutenant in 1956. He
logged more than 420
hours of flight time in F-
94C fighters as a member
of the 46th Fighter
Interceptor Squadron.
After his military service
he worked for the U.S.
Postal Service as a mail
handler until his retirement.
He was preceded in
death by Elizabeth Harris
and is survived by a daughter, Joni M. Gonzales; two
grandchildren, all of
Topeka; and a brother,
James Gammell.
Funeral services were
held on Friday, April 23, at
the Penwell-Gabel
Midtown Chapel.
Graveside services were at
Four Mile Cemetery south
of Council Grove with military honors.
